Where can I get a bear-proof container?
I’m going on a budget camping trip in Wyoming/Montana. Do I have to buy a specific airtight bear proof container, or is there something cheaper I can get at Walmart or something? All the containers I’ve found online specifically for bears run around $75 or so, and that’s pretty steep.
Most of the approved bear cannisters are around $75-80. Whether or not you need one depends on the agency that administers the land you will be on. If you do need one, it will have to be on the approved list which means that they have tested them with brown bears (grizzly bears) and they can’t open them.
In many areas, the old bear bag trick doesn’t work as the bears have figured out how to kamikazi dive bomb the bag from up the tree and take off with your food, so bear cannisters are the only option.
Instead of buying one, you might be able to rent one. Many ranger stations will offer bear cannisters for rent. I just finished a backpacking trip where they were $5/week at the ranger station. Stores such as REI and Sport Chalet will rent them, but they charge more. Sport Chalet, for example, was $8 for the first day, and $5/day thereafter.
