Hiking Gear List

Camping near Monument Valley?

A buddy and I have planned a camping trip in southern Utah for the dates of 10/16 – 10/18.

We are wanting to get the “real camping experience,” ergo we will be packing light, staying at a place without running water, showers, etc.

Neither of us are experienced campers. Can anyone offer suggestions for the following:

1) The average low temp there at that time of year is 46 degrees. What kind of gear and clothes should we bring to address the temperature?

2) Is there a list of things we should bring?

3) Is there any advice you can give about camping in that area? We plan on doing plenty of hiking, etc.

Thanks!
eo

The average low temperature for October may be 46 degrees, but last week the temperature in my camp near Aspen was 30 degrees. Therefore, pack a 0 degree bag if you have one or be prepared to wear a down jacket and heavy fleece in a +15 degree bag and pour boiling water in jugs to keep you warm at night. Snow is forecast for Colorado tonight. The Monument Valley area and the mountainous forest south of there in Dixie National Forest is likely to be covered in snow by mid-October. Big difference between camping in a low-elevation valley and up on summits in the area.

If you provided a list of gear that you own, then it would be easier to provide you with tips on what you may need to buy. However, there are web-sites that provide many checklists for different conditions.

You should study the Monument Valley and Dixie National Forest web-sites if you plan to be dispersed camping there. “Plenty” of hiking means different things to different campers. I consider a normal trip to be ten miles of backpacking or daypacking per day, with elevation ascents of 3,000 to 6,000 feet. I consume about eight quarts of water per day: a quart of hot chocolate and coffee with another quart of water for boiling a dehydrated soup or other item for each meal for the first gallon, then a second gallon of water that I filter along the trail as I travel. Water is likely to be your biggest concern, followed by enough shelter, insulation, and dry clothes to be comfortable.

Gear

Gear

$78.07

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A gear is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part in order to transmit torque. Two or more gears working in tandem are called a transmission and can produce a mechanical advantage through a gear ratio and thus may be considered a simple machine. Geared devices can change the speed, magnitude, and direction of a power source. The most common situation is for a gear to mesh with another gear, however a gear can also mesh a nonrotating toothed part, thereby producing translation instead of rotation. The gears in a transmission are analogous to the wheels in a pulley. An advantage of gears is that the teeth of a gear prevent slipping. When two gears of unequal number of teeth are combined a mechanical advantage is produced, with both the rotational speeds and the torques of the two gears differing in a simple relationship. In transmissions which offer multiple gear ratios, such as bicycles and cars, the term gear, as in first gear, refers to a gear ratio rather than an actual physical gear.
